About Us
Originally powered by a gas engine, the sawmill was hand-operated when Scottie (Norris) Hyde moved to Sicamous and purchased the facility in 1951. With the help of his wife and children, Scottie quickly developed Hyde Sawmill into a successful, fully functioning lumber mill servicing the Sicamous region. [This service also included supporting the maintenance of the family’s own farm, such as cutting fencing for livestock, beams for the barn, and lumber for the house and all of the outbuildings.
In 1983, Alan Hyde, son of Scottie, moved back to the family farm with his wife to raise their two children and revitalize the sawmill that he had worked at as a child to help support his family. The mill quickly began cutting railroad ties, which was a booming market and in high demand at the time, as well as supplying the local residential construction industry. With a steady increase in the frequency and size of orders over the next seven years, Alan and his wife, Kim, grew the mill into a busy and successful lumber business servicing British Columbia’s interior.
In 1990, Kim’s parents, Merv and Anne Siegrist, relocated to Sicamous to become partners in Hyde Sawmill, and together they purchased a new, larger facility to accommodate the business’ significant growth and increasingly large contracts that the old saw mill could no longer keep up with. This partnership continued for ten years, until Merv and Anne’s retirement. Today, Alan and his son, Tyler, continue to operate Hyde Sawmill as a highly successful, industry-leading lumber mill, which has become a core member of the Sicamous community and a major contributor to British Columbia’s lumber industry.
